According to the new Physical activity guidelines from the government, we need to be doing 5hrs of moderate exercise a week (e.g. swimming, power walking, dancing or social tennis) or 2 1/2 hours of vigorous exercise per week! They also recommend combining the two and including 2 sessions of muscle strengthening per week. The damaging longterm effects of prolonged sitting are mentioned with recommendations to move as much as possible and preferably do something everyday. This is definately a change from previous advice, which was to perform 3 x 30 mins sessions of exercise a week, which is now clearly not enough, due in part to our diet, prolonged sitting at work and daily commuting. If you feel like you want/need an extra session in your week, join our Thursday TRX/Cardio at 6am at Avoca Scout hall. Weve moved indoors and this workout incorporates lots of muscle strengthening exercises, cardio and is definately classified as vigorous exercise! If you cant run or skip, dont worry, well have the rowing machine and boxing bags for you to create some cardio! Its one of our favorite workouts for both power and endurance.
