According to the results of last years state assessments, my daughter is far below average, and performing far below her age and grade level. According to these tests, created by someone who has never met my daughter or had the pleasure of her company, my daughter is not bright. But, I disagree. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Not only is she bright, but she is funny and social and a pleasure to be near. She is compassionate and has a brave heart. She looks out for the underdog and marches to the beat of her own drum. She cares little about others opinions of her. The clothes she wears, how she does her hair, what type of games and toys she prefers, are all personal choices, she is rarely influenced by others and often blazes her own trail rather than following along the path others might find more appropriate. She is artistic and witty , she makes me laugh every day, and she has some of the best ideas Ive ever heard. She amazes me all the time with how clever she is when faced with a difficult situation and you can be sure, if she is elbows deep in something, actually doing not just reading or filling in bubbles, she is extremely bright and she will understand whatever concept you throw at her if she can tackle it in a tangible, hands-on way. None of this can be measured by a standardized test that essentially pits child against child, teacher against teacher and district against district. So, because I already know the kind of child my daughter is and I am so very blessed to call her my own, I do not need these tests to define her because I know how very, very bright she is. And I know that she is certainly not far below average. As such, my daughter will not be participating in the upcoming tests and I will continue to tell her how absolutely fantastic she is without any annoying test results to get in the way of that.
