According to todays Courier Mail a Brisbane City Council (BCC) road traffic travel time study indicates the eastern suburbs have the worst traffic congestion . Stanley St is apparently the slowest corridor in the city. This finding arises despite BCCs recent changes to the lanes along Stanley St that have added more capacity for motorists. These lane additions / changes have made Stanley St significantly more cyclist-hostile. Despite these Stanley St “improvements” hundreds of motorists every day continue to rat-run along Lower River Terrace – thereby placing at risk the safety of cyclists entering/exiting the South East Bikeway at its Lower River Terrace termination. Cr Adrian Schrinner makes a ridiculous claim that the upgrade of Wynnum Rd, which is planned to have work commence on it during 2016 to increase it from four to five lanes, is expected to relieve pressure. In fact this is only likely to make the Stanley Street congestion worse, as adding road capacity to address one bottleneck only moves the traffic congestion along to the next bottleneck. This is the fantasy politicians and road engineers love to peddle about traffic congestion i.e.. if we just throw some more money at expanding road capacity we can fix the problem. This is simply perpetuating the never ending cycle of the same futile approach of spending yet more money to fix the problems created by the last spend. It has to be the height of stupidity to repeatedly adopt the same approach of throwing more #goodmoneyafterbad but expecting a different result.
