Accordingly to a study published in the journal Nature, graphene membranes could be used to sieve hydrogen gas from the atmosphere -- a development that could pave the way for electric generators powered by air...The first two-dimensional crystal known to science, graphene is the thinnest, lightest and strongest object ever obtained. It is harder than diamond and 200 times stronger than steel (CNN). Sometimes things so too good to be true, say like a water powered engine or algae and seaweed that can produce enough oxygen to fill up four pressurized scuba tanks just from an eight cubic foot aquarium. All of these innovations, including graphene hail from the mighty, but tiny island of Japan, In all three instances named, they are all game changers and right on time as far as need and demand. Does anyone yet fathom the military/industrial applications alone for graphene; never mind the commercial offerings as fuel cells for electric cars, cell phone/laptop/tablet batteries (that have 24 hour charges) as it is so versatile (multiple applications, not just batteries,) lightweight and apparently stronger than steel. If it pans out, this invention places Japan at the height of preeminence once again, again as far as the technological sector goes; and this is only what they choose to share with the rest of us, and in all seriousness it is innovation that paved the way for Americas own preeminence as a super power with the introduction and field test of the atomic bomb. For Japan, this invention is like being the one who invented the wheel and the inflated rubber tire with all future cars manufactured then dependent on this very technology, forcing the competition and the industry standard for that matter; to have to lease and licence this new innovation or at the very least, have to pay royalties for its use, as this will be safeguarded by domestic and international patents; and of course the rule of law. If the European Union is to prevent future wars on the continent, as fair and free competition on the open market place becomes the deciding efforts for global dominance, rallying former rivals to a common enemy in the abstract (even if it is just ethics and virtue.) The abstract then could be restructuring global business from the detrimental effects of American imperialism, as well as the former sins of European slavery and colonialism, that has negatively effected the lives of billions and creating a new business acumen, that such countries as Norway have already put into practice; Praise Allah. Since American imperialisms stamp has been made on the planet under such auspices of The White Mans Burden, (coined originally by Kipling) and the likes of Theodore Roosevelt; the sins of slavery are still ongoing, forcing nations into war over petty resource issues and post colonialistic quarrels (debt, rampant exploitation, tax shell games etc.) Rather than petty isolated conflicts over resource or economic downturns as we have seen recently in the Ukraine, that ultimately erupt into war when left to fester; the EU then offers a chance for redemption and restructuring before the sins of the past become the judgement of the future. Such as the present and ongoing civil war in Syria has been left to itself, how much can one say then that Western imperialism (for example through sanctions alone, the US state department loves to give those out at the drop of a hat, look at all the good they did in Iraq; helping to shape future events there,) or in general, such influence has not been a deciding factor. Syria has oil and gas of which is sold readily to both China and Russia; and any sanctions imposed by the United States only hurts the civilian populous and tightens the relationship between China, Russia and Syria; making Syria an outcast pariah nation. In so keeping, any patent or invention hailing from Japan or anywhere for that matter, has to respected by the rule of law, just as the patent dispute over Samsung and Apple was resolved in this very manner; by the rule of law. It is the only thing that will keep the planet from world war and for nations like Japan from applying said technologies to their own military apparatus or selling it directly to China or Russia. For America, her fate is clear. It is education and innovation that will deter our fall from preeminence. It is innovation that will be our life blood. If we as a nation have not purged the sins of slavery from the interior down unto our shores, such predation will occur with great abandonment and finally turned in upon itself as a proverbial cancer devouring its own populous, as the rest of the world sits to a hypothetical banquet table, that America has not been invited to. Just Pause for Thought!!!
