Accounting Manager Organization Profile: Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond. We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with many local NGOs and community based organizations to implement our programs. We currently work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read’s worldwide team has impacted over 7.8 million children by constructing more than 1,700 schools, establishing over 16,000 libraries, publishing 882 new children’s book titles in 27 local languages, and reaching over 25,000 girls through our Girls’ Education program. Room to Read has an annual budget of approximately US$44 million and our global staff numbers over 600. Our global headquarters is located in San Francisco, and we have smaller fundraising offices in Delhi, New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. We have program offices in Colombo, Dar es Salaam, Dhaka, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kathmandu, Lusaka, New Delhi, Pretoria, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. Position Overview: Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Accounting Manager is directly and indirectly responsible for processes related to cash management, AP and related accounts, fixed assets, fund and contributions reporting, month end close and special projects as needed. This position is responsible for coordinating with worldwide accounting and finance managers as well as non-accounting staff regarding month end close and consolidation. Based in the San Francisco Global Office, this role manages two accounting team members and has frequent and regular interaction with colleagues in countries where Room to Read has either a fundraising or programmatic presence. Duties & Responsibilities: In collaboration with Country Finance & Accounting Officers, Regional Finance Director and the Global Office accounting team, ensures accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end accounting closes and reports worldwide consolidated data for Room to Read’s accounts. Prepares, publishes and validates consolidated Board financial statements on a quarterly basis. Creates, maintains and reports on fund balances. Coordinates and reviews cash management needs with the global and country offices and prepares wires for transfer. Oversees the account payables cycle and reviews supporting documentation before presenting to the check/wire approvers. Reviews country accounting data, identifies and corrects errors, computes accruals applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for non-profit transactions. Coordinates with global and country offices to maintain intercompany account entries and reconciliations. Documents process changes and updates the Finance and Accounting Policy Manual, as needed. Maintains credit card payment processes in compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). Manages and monitors capital assets, proposes and implements capitalization policies, useful lives, depreciation, acquisition and retirements. Participates in accounting staff hiring process and provides ongoing training and mentoring to staff. Assists with evaluation and implementation of global accounting systems, processes and policies. Documents and assists with training to new team members in GO offices; international travel may be required. Assigns tasks to volunteers, temp employees or interns in the GO office as required. Other duties as required and assigned by the Controller or CFO. Qualifications: Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience, preferably some with a nonprofit organization Proven supervisory experience Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English Comfortable communicating using email, Skype or other internet-based systems Adept at using MS Office suite applications General ledger database knowledge Results and detail oriented, accurate, and highly organized Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided Preferred: Experience with Epicor Enterprise, FRx, Raiser’s Edge, and Salesforce Effectiveness in working or volunteering in a non-profit organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead To be successful as a member of the Room to Read team, you will also: Have passion for our mission and a strong desire to impact a dynamic nonprofit organization Be an innovative and creative thinker that tries new things and inspires others to do so Have a very high level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness Have a strong work ethic and require minimal direction Work well independently as well as part of a team Thrive in a fast-paced and fun environment Compensation: Room to Read offers a competitive salary with excellent benefits.
