Accused thief remanded A man previously employed to one of the islands major juice manufacturing companies, accused of stealing over $1.4 million, was remanded when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court recently. Charged with larceny as a servant is 24-year-old Rowen Williamson who pleaded guilty. The prosecution alleged that the accused, who was employed as an assistant manager at the company, manipulated payroll by creating two fictitious employees to which salaries were paid. The court heard that sometime in June, an audit revealed that salaries were being paid to two employees that simply could not be accounted for. Moreover, the paygrade did not coincide with the scale of workers in question. It is believed that payroll systems were manipulated so that there was a direct deposit of salaries to the account of Williamson, under the guise that the funds were being paid to legitimate employees of the company. As a result, the company reportedly suffered a loss of $1,411,092.78 It was revealed that police personnel picked up the accused at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) as he made an attempt to flee the island. Subsequently, Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Georgiana Fraser ordered the accused remanded into custody until August 12 pending a mention hearing under the grounds that he appears to be a flight risk. A fingerprint order was also made.
