Achievements of the Quezon City Public Library The Quezon City government takes pride of the achievements of the Quezon City Public Library (QCPL)on the citys 75th Foundation year. As one of the largest public libraries in Metro Manila, the QCPL has been nominated for various awards and recognition that include, among others: • Nominee for the Search for Outstanding Children’s Services in the National Library affiliated Public Libraries (September 7, 2013) • Nominee for Membership of the Beyond Access, an International organization linked up with the world’s most innovative public libraries as members (2012) • Nominated for UNESCO WORLDBOOK Capital (April 11, 2012) • Finalist in the 2008 Search for Outstanding City Library of Metro Manila • Awarded as one of the Most Outstanding Public Libraries in 1999-2000 During the 65th Anniversary of the QCPL held in October 8 last year, Mayor Herbert M. Bautista expressed plans to transform the Quezon City Public Library (QCPL) into an independent, revenue-earning enterprise as a publishing house that is capable of printing its books for QC as well as for other local government units. “I envision a dynamic, vibrant and modern Quezon City public library; not just to have an efficient library, but as an enterprise as well”, the mayor announced. He also laid out his various plans for the library which include among others, the improvement of the building and securing ownership of property where some branch libraries are located. The QCPL was formally organized and inaugurated by the Doña Aurora Quezon on August 16, 1948 and was housed next to the post office in a one-storey building near the old city hall in EDSA. Starting out with four employees and 4,000 volumes of books donated by the National Library, the library now has a collection composed of more than 18,131 books and a total of 71 computer stations for Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), encoding and internet available free of charge to QC residents. It serves nearly 23 percent or 2.679 M residents from Metro Manila’s total population of 11.553 M (2007 Census) with a wide variety of programs and services through the main library located at the back of Quezon City Hall and 21 smaller libraries scattered all over the city.
