Acid attack We are seeing an increasing number of patients with signs of tooth wear from acid. Acids from food/drink or gastric conditions such as heartburn soften the surface of the tooth’s enamel, which is then more easily worn away. Over time, acid erosion can result in sensitive teeth, shorter or darker teeth, and may require complex dental intervention. Some tips to follow are: • Use a straw for fruit juices and carbonated drinks. • Chew gum or eat cheese after meals to protect enamel. • Don’t brush your teeth for at least 1 hour after consuming acidic food.
