Acknowledging the Victims: A practical step towards designating streets and squares in the memory of the war victims in Afghanistan Following several deliberative meetings, the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO) and the Local Victims Councils with the leaderships of the Kabul Municipality and the Ministry of Culture and Information, we initiated on the naming of the avenues, streets and lanes of the Kabul city. Based on request of Kabul local victims councils, the Afghanistan Human Rights and Democracy Organization (AHRDO) started widely consultation with both state and non state organizations, with the objective of initiating of a public campaign. As a result, we started our official public campaign today termed as “Acknowledging the Victims: A practical step towards designating the streets and squares in the memory of the war victims in Afghanistan” in collaboration with Local Victims Councils of Kart-e Naw, ChehlSutun and Dashti Barchi and civil society organizations. This campaign aims to collect signatures and mobilize the support of the different social groups especially the state institutions, victims’ families and the people at large to achieve following objectives: 1. Institutionalize the collective memories of the protracted history of violence, human rights violations, and the protection and preservation of war legacies to preempt the recurrence of war, prevent resumption of violence and break the sustained cycle of conflict in Afghanistan; and 2. Generate space for a national discourse on peace, tolerance and social coexistence, raise public awareness about the complex aspects war and encourage peace-building at grassroots level by engaging the victims and other societal groups that have suffered the most. The public campaign “Acknowledging the Victims: A practical step towards designating the streets and squares in the memory of the war victims in Afghanistan” is written on a large piece of cloth. The campaign teams that comprise AHRDO and Local Victims’ Councils will conduct the campaign to collect signatures in support of the campaign objectives. The result of the campaign will be shared with relevant institutions after the conduct of a discussion and a consultation. We, therefore, call upon all our friends, colleagues and relevant civil society organizations to share their viewpoints and support.
