Acoustic Blues guitarist, historian, and educator Michael Hawkeye Herman was born on this day in 1945. Herman moved to the San Francisco area from the upper Mississippi River Valley in 1968 and sought out and learned from Blues icons such as Son House, Brownie McGhee, Bukka White, Mance Lipscomb, Furry Lewis, Lightnin` Hopkins and Sam Chatmon. He became a staple on the San Francisco Blues scene as a solo artist and a sideman. He began touring nationally in 1984 and is a frequent performer at Blues and Folk festivals as well as clubs and coffehouses. Herman won The Blues Foundation`s 1998 Keeping The Blues Alive award for his work in the Blues In The Schools program. Hawkeye is now a member of The Board of Directors at The Blues Foundation. Herman has a great CD available, Blues Alive on the Topaz label.
