Across the street from Amy’s Restaurant in Falmouth is a large brick building. In the early 1900s it was known as Lightner’s Store. Harry Lightner had, as octogenarian Marion Brooks Robinson said, a “penny shopping heaven.” In his glass case he had wax bottles of sweet syrup (you bit off the top and drank the liquid); miniature cones of sugar candy; lemon, strawberry, and peppermint canes in glass jars; and thick gingersnaps, lemon crisp cookies, and marshmallow-topped bonbon cookies in glass-top bins. Each cost a single penny!
