Acting Secretary General condemns ongoing massive arrest and repression against Jamaat-Shibir activists; demands immediate release of the detainees Date: 19 June, 2014 Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued a statement on 19th June, 2014 protesting and condemning the unlawful arrest of two people including the elected Vice Chairman of the Polashbari Upazila under Gaibandha district Abu Talib and the Secretary of the Jhalkathi district’s Rajapur Upazila unit Secretary of Jamaat Maulana Hemayet Uddin. “I am severely protesting and condemning the unlawful arrest of two people including the elected Vice Chairman of the Polashbari Upazila under Gaibandha district Abu Talib and the Secretary of the Jhalkathi district’s Rajapur Upazila unit Secretary of Jamaat Maulana Hemayet Uddin. The law enforcers have been arresting the Jamaat-Shibir activists across the country relentlessly. Police has arrested 3 Jamaat activists from Sundarganj of Gaibandha on 19th June noon. Police also arrested Shialkol Union Jamaat Secretary Hannan Sheikh of the Shirajganj district on 18th June noon. By arresting Jamaat-Shibir people nationwide, the government wants to create panic among the general masses. The ruling party thugs have launched a reign of terror by conducting terrorism, abduction and murder. But instead of arresting the party men, the authority is indulging the terrorists to cause massive deterioration of law and order situation. The Chhatra League terrorists chopped the Shibir leader of Rajshahi University Rasel and cut off his legs barbarously and made him critically injured by firing him bullet subsequently. The victim family went to the Motihar police station in order to lodge a case but the locals denied recording the case. Police repeatedly defied accepting the case. These incidents proved that, the government is backing all the misdeeds including murder, abduction and terrorism which are going on across the country. It becomes clear to the nation that, the government has been arresting the Jamaat-Shibir men to attain their ill political interest. We are vehemently protesting and condemning the double standard policy of the government. The elected public representatives are not spared from the repression of the government. The Vice chairman of the Polashbari Upazila of the Gaibandha district and the local Jamaat leader is a people’s representative. The authority has arrested him in order to gain their maligned political interest. I am calling upon the people to raise voice against the torture and repression of the government. I am urging the government to stop the repression and torture and to release the detained leaders and activists including Mr. Abu Talib Abu Talib and Maulana Hemayet Uddin.”
