Acting and filmmaking are more than just a dream – they’re a business too. Let’s face it, whether your dream is being in front the camera or behind it, what you’re dreaming of being is a business. Sure it’s a passion and a fantastically creative pursuit, but if you don’t approach these as a business you are destined to fail. Trust me, I know this lesson all too well …everyone of us that have survived in this business know it. We aren’t taught to think of our pursuit of these dreams this way. Most colleges and universities, film schools and art schools either never approach the business aspect of the dream we pursue or they offer maybe a one semester class about the “business of…” Sadly this lack of education may doom many aspiring actors and filmmakers. Renowned actor trainer Carolyne Barry recently blogged about this subject stating: “One of the more challenging realities of becoming an actor is that it can and will get expensive. The cost of classes, pictures, marketing, demo reels, scripts, theater company dues and union initiation fees and dues, showcases, etc. etc., etc. adds up big time.” She continued “Unfortunately, most new actors don’t stop to consider all the costs involved with the necessary training and marketing or have a plan to finance their career. Often that means major obstacles are in place before they even get started.” These statements are true for both the aspiring actor and filmmaker. So let’s work out a plan to put you in a position for financial survival in these creative endeavors.
