Action from the Monday, September 29, 2014, Barton County Commission meeting – GREAT BEND TOWNSHIP: Renaming the Compost Road – Pat Keenan served as a Barton County Commissioner from 1997 to 2005. During that time, he advocated paving the road to the Great Bend City Composting Site. He took up the cause in 2004 and the road was paved in a joint effort by the Township, the City of Great Bend and Barton County in 2005. Mr. Keenan passed away June 28, 2014. In his honor, it is suggested that the Compost Road, being located on approximately the half mile line between Washington Street and McKinley Street and south from Railroad Avenue to the actual Composting Site, be renamed in his honor. The road will be signed as the Pat Keenan Memorial Road. PROCLAMATION 2014-11: Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve – The Kansas Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve has asked that Barton County adopt the Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve. In addition to recognizing the Guard and Reserve as being essential to the strength of our Nation, the Proclamation urges employers to enforce the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, provide supervisors the tools to effectively manage employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve, appreciate the values, leadership and unique skills of service members and recognize and support service members and their families. The Proclamation was adopted. COMMUNICATIONS: Renewal of the Second Amendment to Third Party Lease – Barton County has leased a building a 1300 Stone, Great Bend, Kansas, since 1989. The space houses 911, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The lease, originally with Southwestern Bell Telephone, now covers AT&T and an expanded office area. By the end of the proposed five year term, the rent will be increased to $468.00 per month. Rental costs are built into the budget for 911 each year. The agreement was renewed. COUNTY SERVICES: Informational Update – Mr. Boeckman provided the informational report of work completed during the last period. Announced – The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) will hold a meeting on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, from 9am – noon, at The Ramada, 1400 N Lorraine, Hutchinson, Kansas. KDOT and KTA will discuss projects being considered for preliminary engineering. In addition, the latest outcomes from the Kansas Freight Advisory Committee will be presented. It is anticipated that local County officials will attend the meeting.
