Action needed by Missouri families - update from Parental Rights: Urge Gov. Nixon to Sign Parental Rights Education Bill Last week we asked for your help in urging the Missouri Senate to pass HB 1490, an education bill that halted the Common Core and supports student privacy and parental rights in education. You rose to the occasion, and HB 1490 was successfully passed! While that is exciting news, it is too early to celebrate. There is considerable concern that Gov. Nixon, who was instrumental in introducing Common Core into Missouri in the first place, will not be eager to sign the bill into law. If legislators are forced to override a veto, things will get a lot tougher. They may or may not have the votes to make that happen. Instead, we need to contact the governor today and urge him to sign this bill. A large number of contacts, coupled with the solid votes supporting the bill in both chambers of the legislature, should be enough to convince him that opposing this bill would put him on the wrong side of this issue. Action Item Please take a moment right now to contact the governor and urge him to sign HB 1490. Tell him you believe curriculum standards should come from the states, not the federal government or some private group. Tell him parents and teachers should be setting those standards, not unaccountable bureaucrats. Remind him that HB 1490 will protect student privacy by strongly restricting the data being gathered on our children. This bill is good for children, good for parents, good for our schools, and good for Missouri. You can contact the governor’s office through the online form here or by phone: (573)-751-3222. Then pass this email on to any family and friends who might join you in taking action. You can read more about HB 1490 from our allies at Home School Legal Defense Association here. Thank you for taking a stand to protect the role of parents and teachers through local control of education standards. Sincerely, Michael Ramey Director of Communications & Research
