Activists have witnessed numerous violations by the County in the way this project has been handled. For one thing, they had no biologist present as a monitor during the swift felling of 600+ trees over the week before New Years and it was only after concerned citizens noticed this absence and complained that a biologist was flown in from Virginia on Jan. 4th. There have been numerous Monarch butterflies seen in the Eucalyptus trees. Monarchs may soon be listed as endangered since their numbers are in decline 90% this past year. PhD biologist Travis Longcore reports that Oxford Lagoon represents the sixth largest Monarch butterfly overwintering site in all of LA County. However, the few remaining Eucalyptus trees left are slated to be cut down tomorrow. There have also been multiple visits from the osprey, a species of special concern according to CDFW. This video taken yesterday shows the osprey in the lagoon and perching. The osprey will only use high perch areas such as the high branches of the Eucalyptus, and if removed, the osprey is at risk of being shot at by boaters who dont want their equipment pooped on (this has happened before). https://youtube/watch?v=idTH2vGXljQ&feature=share Furthermore, the new trees wont be planted until May. Meanwhile, the wildlife will have to go elsewhere.
