Acts 14:1-7 -- Paul and Barnabas at Iconium. (1) In Iconium they entered the Jewish synagogue together and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks came to believe, (2) although the disbelieving Jews stirred up and poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brothers. (3) So they stayed for a considerable period, speaking out boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the word about his grace by granting signs and wonders to occur through their hands.a (4) The people of the city were divided: some were with the Jews; others, with the apostles. (5) When there was an attempt by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their leaders, to attack and stone them, (6) they realized it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside, (7) where they continued to proclaim the good news Comments on Acts 14:1-7 The narrative repeats some of the experiences of their previous encounters at Antioch. Some accept their words and others turn many of the Gentiles against them. Luke tells us that they stayed in Iconium for a good length of time, preaching the word of God and performing many signs and wonders that pointed to God’s favour for this mission. In this narrative, Luke applies the term “apostles” for the first time to Paul and Barnabas. Luke may be telling us that the views the ministry of Paul and Barnabas as equat to that of the twelve, or he may be using another source fo his story without challenging the use of the term in his source. In his letters, Paul will speak of himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ.
