Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. This passage is often erroneously used to prove baptismal regeneration. However a simple understanding of English grammar quickly clears up all confusion . The punctuation is placed correctly to divide each statement into a phrase that ends with Calling on the name of the Lord. Furthermore it makes them chronological, such as to keep one from doing the following step without having heeded the previous exhortation. What are the three phrases? 1. Arise calling on the name of the Lord. a. This is commonly called Salvation b. Salvation is the result of having made a decision to arise from your present condition and call on the Lord Jesus Christ. 2. Be baptized calling on the name of the Lord. a. This is the act commonly known as Baptism b. Baptism is the result of having trusted Christ and in obedience to Him identifying with Him by being baptized calling or in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. 3. Wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord a. This is the process commonly called personal Sanctification b. Sanctification takes place as I continuously cleanse my personal life of sin, by calling on the power in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ 4. What is the principle to drawn from this passage? a. Everything in the life of the believer is accomplished by calling of the name of the Lord. b. Many Christians believe in calling on the name of the Lord for salvation, but then being baptized only in the name of one person in the Godhead. c. Many Christians believe in calling on the Lord for salvation and baptism; however they trust their own personal efforts for sanctification. Conclusion. There are a multitude of scenarios in the life of the saint which are remedied by "calling on the name of the Lord." This is not simply saying words that drive all our troubles away. But rather placing all our faith and action in line behind "calling on the name of the Lord."
