Acts 6:5 - They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy - TopicsExpress

Acts 6:5 - They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 11:38,39 - (Writing about the many heroes of faith) The world was not worthy of them. They were all commended for their faith. We recently attended a memorial service for a friend of ours. Many kind, complimentary words were spoken about him. As is quite common at funerals, most of the comments celebrated his character and relationships more than his life accomplishments. Q: What will people say at your funeral/memorial service? David Brooks (New York Times) recently gave a talk that began, Ive been thinking about the difference between the resume-virtues and the eulogy-virtues. The resume-virtues are the skills you bring to your vocation, the marketplace. The eulogy-virtues are the ones mentioned at your funeral. These are deeper: who you really are, your personality, your humor, your ethics and morals, the nature of your relationships. Most of us would agree that the eulogy-virtues are more important than the resume-virtues. Or, as a pastor once preached, When we come to the end of our lives, will we leave behind a title or a testimony? There is a huge difference, isnt there? Character matters, today and eternally. Look again at the descriptive words in our verses above - full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; commended for their faith. These people are remembered for their heart and soul investment....which, by the way, did impact their life resume. Our heart attitudes certainly affect our behavior. Lets focus primarily on our testimony, and let our legacy naturally flow from that. How? Its summarized by Jesus = Love God / Love people. Live like that, and your eulogy will touch the heart of many people...and your heavenly Father. F.H.P. Pastor Tim
