Actually, during Lincolns tenure, it was called the First American Bank if memory serves. The Democrat party was the first to try to get this central statist bank that Adams and Jefferson has warned against vehemently. They were going to basically start doing what they are doing now and seize the southern plantations and farms in the new territories. So Lincoln did the only thing that could be done to at least delay such a plot--kill the source of production (African slaves). The first war between the states did have to do with freeing slaves and ending slavery, but it had far more to do with preventing the establishment of a central state bank which would take power away from treasury. They finally got their central bank passed in 1913 with the Federal Reserve Act. Kennedy literally died trying to repeal it.
