Acura TLX named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (Arlington, VA – Insurance News and Markets) - Acura’s 2015 TLX midsize sedan has earned the Top Safety Pick+ for acceptable performance in the small overlap front test, good ratings in other crashworthiness evalutions and a superior rating for front crash prevention from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Driver’s space was maintained in the small overlap test and the test dummy’s movement was controlled – the head hit the front airbag and stayed there until rebound. The side curtain airbag also deployed and protected the head from the damaged side structure and other objects. The small overlap test was introduced by IIHS in 2012 - 25 percent of a vehicles front end on the driver side strikes a rigid barrier at 40 mph. The crash replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or a utility pole. The TLX does better in the small overlap test than the Acura TSX, but not as well as the Acura TL, which earned the top rating of good. The TLX’s predecessor models did not have front crash prevention and the TLX offers two options including a warning-only system and one that combines the warning system and automatic breaking. The TLX also received good ratings in long-standing moderate overlap front, side and roof strength tests as well as tests of the head restraint. Combined with the rating for the small overalp test and front crash prevention ratings, the TLX qualified as a 2014 Top Safety Pick, the seventh model from Honda and Acura to do so.
