Adam Harrower, Kirstenbosch horticulturist reports: For no apparent reason in the calm of Saturday morning at about 9:30 am, a substantial limb comprising one third of the magnificent Atlas Cedar collapsed. Sadly in the process taking with it the headstone of Pearson’s Grave. Here are some photos in case you don’t get to see it in person. This North African conifer arrived at Kirstenbosch in the form of seed sent from Kew, shortly before Pearson died in 1916. It was germinated and planted next to his grave as a young sapling in 1919.
