Adam and Eve were not originally fashioned with a conscience. Through partaking of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil they developed a conscience which the enemy used to accuse them. Through fear and shame he solidified the lie that they were separated from God. -an evil conscience was formed. And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, Where are you? And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? Genesis 3:8-11 Man ran and hid in the bushes. Man covered himself with fig leaves. The curse is based in the lie that we are guilty and shamefully separated from the One who loves us. God did not run God never hid. Jesus blood cleanses us from an evil conscience not by accusing us but by declaring our innocence and union with God. Before we were lost in Adam we were to be found in Christ! Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. -Hebrews 10:19 Morality apart from Christ may result in a clean conscience because of the good things we have done...or a dirty conscience because we do bad things... But ultimately the serpent wins when our conscience becomes our accuser, our judge, and our image of God. There is but one who is called the accuser of the brethren and we know who he is....he is not God. for I have not come to condemn the world but to save it! -Jesus For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God. -John 3:17 There is one Judge and He is not condemning you. There is one God and He loves you. By cleansing us from our evil guilty conscience, the cross has brought us back to the tree of life, back to Jesus, back to innocence.
