Adam (and Justin) come from money. My fathers brother, Douglas Hartt, served as Director General of Public Works Canada under Pierre Trudeau. That is as high as we can go in the civil service. He was furious with me for not making use of grants. I had started to study THE I CHING which teaches that the superior man refuses help from the mighty and always stands with the lowly. There is only one person on earth I want to meet, my uncle one day told me. I asked, Who is that? He replied, Jane Jacobs. I told him, She is my friend. I will introduce you to her. He became furious that the idiot nephew who would not follow his advice not only knew but had as a friend the one person he wanted to meet. He refused to let me introduce him to her. Too bad for him. A politician is one who has failed the third temptation of Christ. In THE GODFATHER when the Old Don says to Michael, This is not what I wanted for you. I wanted you to be a politician, a senator, someone important, Michael replies, I am not a penzonovante. That means someone who is bought and sold.THE GODFATHER is, perhaps, the most moral novel ever while the 3 films remain the most moral movies ever. I came to Toronto with nothing but faith. It is funny but in the churches I went to the people I met for the most part did not believe in God and laugh at faith.The atheist Henry Miller wrote, One man operating alone on faith can accomplish what trained armies can not do. From experience I know this is true. In the East they say, The nearer the temple the farther from The Buddha. In the West it is said, The nearer the church the farther from God. There is something we are called to have faith in that is harder to believe in than God. That something is our self. I know because I have been believing in myself for over forty years since I first read THE I CHING and a particularly powerful translation of THE NEW TESTAMENT unique from conventional versions. It has been hard, yes, but no one who wants to build muscles lifts feathers. Mrs. Jacobs last book is titled DARK AGE AHEAD. It should be retitled DARK AGE NOW. We do not need God to show us that she was/is right. Get ready because the curtain is coming down.
