Adamawa traders count losses under state of emergency The state of emergency has hampered business activities in Adamawa State. Traders in Adamawa have expressed worry over the state of emergency declared by President Goodluck Jonathan in the state, saying it has negatively affected their businesses. A spokesman of the Traders Union, Adamu Ngurore, said this in Yola on Saturday in an interview. He said that the closure of the border with the Republic of Cameroun as well as the inability to make calls on mobile phones had adversely affected their businesses. “Many of us are now living from hand to mouth while some people who are small time traders have been completely grounded. “Our losses can be quantified in millions. Our customers from the neighbouring Cameroon are no longer coming,” he said. Mr. Ngurore appealed to the Federal Government to review the state of emergency it declared on Adamawa, saying that security situation in the state had improved. “‘The state is peaceful and the people are law abiding. We hope government will take that into consideration and review our case,” he pleaded. The trader commended officials of some local government councils in the state who he said, provided foodstuff to the needy including petty traders whose business folded up as a result of the state of emergency. “‘Such traders should be assisted with soft or interest-free loan when the state of emergency is lifted to enable them pick up again,’’ Mr. Ngurore pleaded.
