Adams was at pains to point out that NBCs lawyers had scrutinized the relevant piece with a fine-tooth comb and had duly become convinced of the complete legitimacy of the acquired material. Moreover, Adams continued, and conceded, as the hacker was technically committing nothing less than an outright felony, there was absolutely no way whatsoever that his identity could ever be revealed to the general public or the media. The hacker is aware of the interest his apparent UFO data has provoked, but does not wish to respond, Adams clarified. The collective U.S. government, perhaps astutely realizing that trying to uncover the hackers real identity might very well require bringing a lawsuit against a body as powerful as NBC-which would surely have guaranteed huge, and very unwelcome publicity for the curious affair-chose to do absolutely nothing at all (aside from brood and seethe in silence, one is most strongly inclined to suspect).
