KNOXVILLE – U.S. Senate candidate Terry Adams formally launched his campaign today with a two day, six city “Backbone of Tennessee” tour. The tour, with stops today in the Tri-Cities, Knoxville and Chattanooga and stops in Nashville, Jackson and Memphis tomorrow, will be held outside Sen. Lamar Alexander’s offices across the state to show support for the working people of Tennessee, small business owners and veterans. “Too many Tennesseans are working full time and still cannot make ends meet. Alexander wants to abolish the minimum wage when he should be supporting efforts to in the Senate to raise it. Who benefits from increasing the minimum wage? Veterans, single mothers, and locally owned small businesses.” “A higher minimum wage not only increases the paychecks of hard working Tennesseans, it boosts our economy by putting money into the hands of people who are likely to spend it,” Adams said. “In fact, our state saw one of the largest drops in unemployment the last time the minimum wage was raised. Another state – Washington recently passed the highest minimum wage increase in the nation and now has an unemployment rate lower than the national average and is 16th in job creation.” Adams continued, “It is inconceivable to me that in the 21st Century that a senator representing Tennessee would support abolishing the minimum wage. This goes beyond politics, beyond political philosophy, this goes to the core of what it means to represent the people of Tennessee.” “Whether you are a minimum wage worker, small business owner or a veteran, you can be sure that Senator Alexander doesn’t have the backbone to fight for you, your family and their future in Washington,” said Adams. “That is why I say to Sen. Alexander to show some backbone for the real backbone of this state: the hard working people, small business owners and veterans and support an increase in the minimum wage now. The vast majority of the state supports it, and a lot of Tennesseans need it.” Adams made his case today at Alexander Senate offices in the Tri-Cities, Knoxville and Chattanooga with events tomorrow at Nashville, Jackson and Memphis offices.
