Addio, Licia Albanese. Her son, Joseph Gimma, now confirms the rumor. The great Southern Italian and American soprano has died at her home in Manhattan, not long after her 105th birthday. The soprano of our dear friend and WFMT colleague the late Andy Karzas and of so many more, she maintained her career, then her singing voice, and then her general activity longer than almost anyone else, ultimately keeping busy and present into her second century. She always worked, too, to assist -- with grants, coaching, and performance exposure -- young singers of Italian repertoire through her Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation and its annual competition in New York. Gracious and witty and never about to budge from her age claim that would have made her only 101 today, she was one of a kind. J. Abresch MET Archive photo from the early fifties when Miss Albanese would have been in her early 40s. New York Times obituary below. Addio, Licia . . . What are your memories of her?
