Adelani Baderinwa Wrote Many people do not have correct understanding of many democratic concepts; hence they go on to mis-interpret certain things. Choosing a partys candidate is a prerogative of the political party. It depends on what they, the party members believed in and agreed to. There is no advanced democracy where primary election or what many refers to as the legitimization of impunity by a few influential persons within the party hierarchy is seen as sine qua non! The American example which is today the most popular has been wrongly, like many other democratic tendencies, copied and even debased! The quality of those that will contest the American primary is always preceded by serious screening. In addition, the popularity and acceptance of a candidate would have been obvious, mostly by the start of the intra-party campaigns. Besides, like their general election, the primary election will be free, fair and credible, and will be seen to be so. It is not the manipulative situation that has characterised the Nigerian conservative situation. Mostly, they come in the manner of the more you look, the less you see...abracadabra! The 2014 Ekiti PDP primary election is still in contention. The result has always been less than good and enthusiastic representation. In the progressive family, the quality of representation matters. While provision is made for primary election where it becomes absolutely necessary, consensus is promoted to be able to produce quality representatives. The type that produced Fashola! By the way, the reference made by my brother, ABS to my Governors is a clearer evidence of lack of understanding of choice of candidate as it suites a political party. It is obvious to all Alliance for Democracy members that only a candidate with credibility, antecedent, and experience can win the 1999 governorship election in Osun. That was why when the chips were down, they went for Chief Bisi Akande who never intended to be Governor. To God be the glory, Chief Akande justified his proponents! And for the CHOSEN ONE, (a la Jose Murinho) Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, he emerged practically unchallenged! I make bold to say that the elders of the party decided to pick the consensus option because it was obvious other contestants may suffer terrible and hurtful defeat. There was no aspirant that worked as hard as Aregbesola. He started early. He mobilised heavily. He ran intra- party and inter-party campaigns never witnessed in Osun. It remains the most issues based, intensive, extensive and colourful. It is with pride that I say that Team Rauf Aregbesola, foundation member of which am, was going for a routing, if the primary held. I remember we were insisting on primary election before the elders decided on consensus. ABS, whom did Omisore contested the PDP senatorial ticket with in 2003? How did he sign the nomination form from inside the Agodi prison? Where was his posters pasted? Where and to whom did he campaigned? What were his manifestoes? History is good!
