Admin Dar Aabid Gunmen attack MLC’s escort CRPF man killed; Lawmaker Was In Shopian Village To Attend Marriage Function Shopian, Aug 26: A CRPF personnel was killed andanother injured when militants fired at the escort of ruling National Conference MLC Showkat Ahmad Ganai in village Awneera in Shopian district Monday. Ganai was in the village to attend a marriage function and was inside a house when the militants struck at around 6.25 p.m, officialssaid. The militants also snatched the service rifles of the personnel. A police official said that attack was carried when Showket Ahmad Ganai was attending the marriage party of one of his party workers, Abdul Ghani Bhat in the village. “As soon as the MLC entered the party worker’s house, his security cover came under heavy fire from militants,” a police official said. The militants reportedly came on a motorbike. “Two CRPF personnel were critically injured in the attack. They were shifted to hospital whereone of them succumbed to his injuries, while another was referred to Srinagar for treatment,” police said. The slain personnel man has been identified as constable Raju Ram and the injured one as constable Lalu Ram- bothfrom 14th Battalion of CRPF. They were, according to police sources, part of the security cover provided to the lawmaker by the local police station and not part of his personal security. “The duo had parked the vehicle outside the house of Abdul Gani Bhat when attacked by the militants,” a police official said. He said the militants alsoran away with the service rifles of the CRPF men. Reports said that a huge contingent of police, CRPF and Army cordoned the entire village and a man hunt has been launched to nab the assailants. “The entire village is under siege and massive searches are on,” reports said. Deputy Inspector General(DIG) of Police, Vijay Kumar said, “The attack can be the handiwork of the same group which earlier in the day carried out an attack in Arwani, Bijbehara.” A police spokesman said:“Two CRPF personnel including the driver wereinjured when militants fired on a CRPF vehicle at Awneera, Shopian this evening. One of the CRPF men later succumbed to his injuries. The vehicle was on escort duty and was on the road. MLC Showkat Ahmad Ganai was in the house of Abdul Gani Bhat at the time of incident, well away from the place of incident.”
