Now onto the main digest; - We featured the launch event for the new Eqbal Ahmad Centre for Public Education (EACPE) hosted by The Second Floor and shared a follow up report. Introduced by Pervez Hoodbhoy the Centre is a web-based learning programme which takes inspiration from the life and works of Eqbal Ahmad. Follow EACPE on twitter @eacpe_pk - Eqbal was active in understanding and articulating protest worldwide. Exploring this further we shared a recent study “World Protests 2006-2013″ by Columbia University and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung analyzing strikes, demonstrations, rallies, riots, road blockages, occupations and other protest actions in 87 countries worldwide. - We have been in contact with the South Asian American Digital Archive responsible for the pending release online of a selection Eqbal Ahmads papers and other materials! Check out their response. Our warm thanks to Samip, Manan ( SAADA), Archivist Jimi Jones (Hampshire College), the student workers helping with the process and Eqbal’s family for all making this access happen. - The Dawn series A century of war, 1914-2014: After 9/11 linked well to our recent and planned explorations so we shared their and ours pieces by Lisa Hajjar: Short form article - How America became a torturing regime in the war on terror, Long form video - Classified Memories- Trying To Try Terror Suspects Who Were Tortured by the CIA. - We began examining arguably the original Multinational the East India Company and its legacy with Eqbals analysis and a video by Nick Robins who has written extensively on the Company. - We learnt more about our page friends and the innovative projects they are undertaking. One such person is Raza Naeem who we found out is doing some very interesting work including writing a book about Yemen. Active in understanding the Arab Spring we shared his article to help us explore hopes and possibilities of Egypt back in September 2013. - Subject of a referendum vote on the 14th January we had two pieces exploring aspects of Egypts Constitution via: o An analysis of the draft constitution and the possible impact on child labor and unionization. o A partial timeline of the country’s faltering progress toward a new constitution. - On the death of Ariel Sharon we introduced an HRW analysis of his legacy with an excerpt from ‘The Public Relations of Ethnocide’ written by Eqbal in 1983 on the Kahan commission connected with the Sabra and Shatila massacre. - We shared oscar nomination congratulations to the individuals and teams at The Act of Killing (TAOK) and The Square who are helping us try and get these documentaries to Pakistan and wider locations. You will remember these docufilms along with Dirty Wars have featured as part of exploring Eqbals work and legacy. - We shared events happening in January and later this year involving and of interest to page friends including; o In Lahore at HRCP a special evening organized by SAWAN to remember Saadat Hasan Manto on the eve of his death anniversary. o A London event - The Arab Uprisings: Reflections, Three Years On. o Looking ahead to April 4-5th we shared via Tanqeed Re-Envisioning Pakistan - The Political Economy of Social Transformation Conference at Sarah Lawrence College NY - We will find out if and how proceedings will be shared globally. - We shared a call for papers from Thaap - Trust for History, Art & Architecture, Pakistan for their 2014 conference - Culture, Art and Architecture of the Marginalized and the Poor. We hope very much page friends can contribute. - We wished a Happy Anniversary to the Transnational Institute, TNI. See the letter on the page from 40 years ago written by director Eqbal Ahmad to the minister of Education in the Netherlands to inform him that the Transnational Institute was established. - We highlighted COINTELPRO and contemporary developments about a major Anti-Vietnam protest event against the FBI with near parallel occurrence to Eqbal & the Harrisburg group. - Since our features on ‘Roots of Violence in Pakistan’ events have continued, including politically and in counter-terrorism laws, we caught up with some of these changes with a Guardian newspaper report. Finally the Eqbal Fan Page is on the Road to Pakistan in April. As admin I am very keen to try and meet with page friends to learn more about you, your projects and Eqbal’s legacy.
