Adolfo Mejia Theater, with its tiers and boxes occupied almost entirely, was the venue for the inaugural concert of the International Cartagena Music Festival, celebration in 2015 its ninth edition. Although the surrounding streets of the legendary building collapsed in traffic, the concert began promptly at 7:00 pm, when the pianist Alexander Melnikov performed several musical pieces by French composer Claude Debussy. The mastery of Russian Melnikov, who surprised the audience with the nuances and speeds interpretation, served as an introduction to Egyptian concerto for piano and orchestra by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, performed by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and conductor Teodor Currentzis. The beginning of the concert was sober and the conductor was greeted with polite applause that were silenced by the first notes of Allegro animato. However, what appeared to be a conservative recital quickly became a burst of energy starring Currentzis, whose movements on stage are closer to those of a rockstar in front of the crowd. The public knew he would face one of the most recognized orchestra pieces of the musicians alive, but apparently no one suspected the magnitude of the recital that Currentzis would direct. Just 42 years old, the Greek artist loves controversy and none of the pieces that he directs gets rid of the contrasts, the personal involvement, the musical opinions, the claim and tension. The second part of the concert became the proof of the paradoxical intention of Teodor Currentzis: handle with anarchy. Together with 60 musicians from 17 different countries participating in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, pianist Alexander Melnikov and flamenco singer Marina Heredia Greek conductor presented El amor brujo, a key part of the Spanish repertoire. Currentzis states that his intention when conducting an orchestra is to look far to get into exile and gather soldiers. To form another type of union perhaps to combine forces and immerse the audience into a sonic journey. This premise goes hand in hand with the theme of the International Cartagena Music Festival, Mare Nostrum, to create a musical journey through the sounds of the Mediterranean, cultural exploration covering each country and demonstrate the musical complexity of this territory. For over an hour, Currentzis lead the orchestra decisively, while his outfit was soaked in sweat of aggressive gestures drawn to each member of the orchestra, being the perfect mechanism. The audience of the inaugural Mare Nostrum concert gave the standing ovation to the conductor and applause forced him to return to the stage twice to thank the public.
