Adolfo Suárez passed away today. He was the first democratic PM in Spain after Franco’s death. Unlike Sadat, he always refused to recognize Israel during his tenure (1976-1981). He was a fascist who had a high profile during Franco’s regime as Director-General of Radio and Television of Spain, the only one allowed during the dictatorship. Then, he became Minister Secretary-General of the Party until he was appointed as PM by the king. Juan Carlos I had been chosen as Head of state by Franco before his own death.
