Adopt An Estero MOA to be Renewed During the environmental forum program that will be hosted by the municipal office of La Trinidad, Benguet on March 26, 2014, the memorandum of agreement for the “Adopt an Estero” program will be renewed. The event will be held at the LT municipal gym. In attendance during the said event will be local government unit (LGU) and line-agency officials; as well as representatives from the private sectors and academes. The Adopt-an-Estero is a program by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources which encourages multi-sectoral cooperation in the massive rehabilitation and maintenance of tributaries of major water bodies. Initially, the program covered only NCR but it was later extended to all regional executive officials (REDs) to “identify similar partnerships within their areas of jurisdiction, targeting no less than 10 waterways, or a portion thereof, per region for the year”. (DENR) In compliance to this order, the Environment and Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB-DENR-CAR) in cooperation with the La Trinidad LGU and some members of the private sectors have signed a Memorandum of agreement on June 15, 2012 formalizing the adoption of Bolo creek which is a tributary of Balili River. Under the MOA, signatories were expected to assist in clean-up drives, information education campaigns (IECs) for communities to care for the creek, as well as to conduct community activities to train the community members on proper waste management. “Cooperation is necessary for this program to succeed. The government alone cannot do it. It needs the participation of everyone. ” says Mr. Arthur A. Pedro, environment management specialist from the municipal Environmental and General Services Office.
