Adrian Awarded Blight Elimination Funds Governor Rick Snyder’s office announced yesterday that the City of Adrian will receive $375,000 to fight blight in the city. In October, Adrian was identified by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) as one of twelve Michigan cities eligible for federal residential blight demolition funds. In order to complete the application process the city partnered with the Adrian community and the Lenawee County Land Bank in identifying blighted residential properties. “Adrian’s proposal was a true collaboration with city staff, residents and community partners” City Administrator Shane Horn stated. “We received many calls and emails from residents helping us to identify blighted properties all with intent on improving neighborhoods”. Adrian’s application was submitted to MSHDA with a demolition proposal of 20 properties. A list of the blighted properties will be made available as the properties are transferred to the Lenawee County Land Bank. “We especially appreciate the collaboration with the Lenawee County Land Bank. Partnership with Lenawee County Treasurer and Land Bank board chair Marilyn Woods was a critical part of the process” said Chris Miller, City of Adrian Economic Developer. Adrian’s eligible residential structures met the following demolition funding criteria: • Considered a public nuisance according to local code and because of age, physical condition or use. • Has had utilities, plumbing, heating, or sewage disconnected, destroyed, removed or rendered ineffective. • The property is owned by the Lenawee County Land Bank or has the capacity to be owned by the Land Bank. “We appreciate the support from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority” City Administrator Shane Horn stated. “Blight has been an ongoing concern in our community; this funding will help in restoring property values while reestablishing neighborhood pride.”
