Adrienne Kyle gave me the number 13 (just lucky I guess): 1. We have a small swimming pool in our back yard in which I found a dead muskrat on the bottom the other night. 2. We just got done cleaning out our garage and I found 6 pairs of Levis I havent seen on two years. 3. On my wife Sharriee and my first date we went to a kareoke Halloween costume party and I would have won the cash prize for my middle-aged punk rocker going through a midlife crisis costume, but they couldnt pay me because I was running a bar tab. 4. When my daughter Desi was about 2 years old she saw the animated Disney movie Jungle Book for the first time when we were visiting friends after which she came into the living room, put her hands on her hips and said, Mommy, Daddy, I need the bare neccessities! 5. When I was attending college and living on campus at University of Washington, for Halloween my buddy Eddy and I let our girl friends dress us up in their dresses and panty hose. 6. When I was 18 years old I quit my job, went to the bank and took out $300 in travellers checks, went to the Greyhound bus station in Seattle and bought a two-week travel anywhere in the continental US ticket. I went to Miami via San Diego and back all by myself. 7. One night when my brother Paul and I were out walking all over the city of Bellevue on the middle of the night we met a seemingly stray dog which wouldnt leave us and followed us all the way home. No one came to collect it when we put ads im the paper and posted Found Dog flyers. It was a somewhat skinny puppy. We named it Dharma Bum after the Jack Karoak book and she ended up living the rest of her life with my sister Kristine and her family after she got married. 8. After a party at my parents house when they were out of town I drove off the road, totalled their car and ended up in the hospital for 6 weeks, 3 weeks before I came to. 9. I lived for a few months with members of the mostly unknown band Shattered Machine. 10. My friend Kevin and I were on a trip to Haiti, but when we reached Miami after transferring planes in the middle of the night in Denver, we learned that the government of democratically elected Aristide had been overthrown and all flights to Haiti were cancelled. 11. When my younger brother Paul was 22 years old he went to the doctor with his second bad nose bleed. Within two weeks he died of leukemia. 12. When I graduated high school at age 18, my parents sent me and my 16 year old brother Paul on a 6 week trip to Europe where travelled by train with our backpacks from London to Paris to Nice to Florence to Venice to Vienna to Switzerland to Munich to Copenhagen to Norway to Amsterdam to Scotland to London then back. 13. In January of 2002 I was out of work, the State was denying me unemployment benefits when I read an article explaining that people with severe head trauma could suffer from depression up to 50 years later which suddenly gave me a reason why my life seemed to be on such a continuing string of bad luck. After mailing my letter to the State disputing their denial of my unemployment insurance, I felt so relieved knowing that the reason things werent going my way was because of untreated depression caused by going headfirst through the car window 25 years earlier that I headed to the bar and celebrated until closing time. The next morning when I came to I felt worse than ever and knew if I ever drank again it would only get worse. That was my turning point almost 12 years ago and today, surrounded by good friends in recovery
