Advanced Technology Ltd 19 September 2012. Why does the door seal of my washing machine go black? and why does the drum and washing have a stale, musky smell? This is due to bacteria and mould inside the machine. this problem is much more common than it used to be, this is due to the combination of various changes that have happened. 1 liquid, liquid tablet, jell and colour safe detergents do not have bleach. this bleach which is present in powder and powder tablets helps to kill off the bacteria. 2 low temperature washes encourages the growth of bacteria. to kill the bacteria the temperature needs to be over 65°C . 3 damp conditions. integrated appliances have a wooden door over the port hole which means that in order to get the wood door closed you have to close the porthole this traps the damp inside the appliance. 4. Cold fill inlet only connections. in the days of hot washes and hot fill appliances the detergent draw was exposed to hot water this helped to keep the draw and its waterways clean, also when a boil wash was run the steam that was produced vented through the draw which also helped to keep the draw clean. so what can I do? 1. use powder Areal detergent on all washes except your colour and dark washes ( then use Areal liquid colour ) 2. wipe dry the door rubber in the fold before you pull the washing out of the drum, this prevents the transfer of scum in the fold of the rubber from transferring on to your nice clean washing. 3. when ever your washing allows do a hot 60°C wash or hotter. 4. use a washing machine de scaler for example Oust Descaler: Dishwasher & Washing Machine. put the machine on a cotton hot 60°C cycle with the de-scaler in main detergent compartment about every 30 or 40 washes. Do this and you are much less likely to need me to replace the door rubber.
