Advent Day 17 Tuesday Read: Luke 1:5-25 Most couples who are expecting a child are filled with anticipation and excitement about the coming event. When Zechariah and Elizabeth—the parents of John the Baptist—got over the initial shock that they would have a child in their old age, and that this child would prepare the way for the coming Christ, they surely began to feel that same kind of excitement. But today’s passage records that the angel Gabriel told them in their case joy would extend beyond the normal new-baby excitement. John would be a source of joy and delight to his parents, yes. But beyond that, the angel said “many will rejoice” over his birth. John would be part of God’s plan to do something that would create a deeper, greater joy even than having a child. This joy would come from the world being “brought back” to a restored relationship with God (vs. 16), turning people’s hearts back to God and His love. The joy of Christmas is that even in our guilty condition God is for us, positive and favorable in His view of us, and eager to bring us back where we belong in relationship with Him.
