Advent Devotions: December 6th Mark 11: 27 - 33 Its easy to trick ourselves into believing that we are different from Marks chief priests, scribes and elders. That, unlike them, we would recognize Jesus and follow him without a second thought or without second guessing his agenda. Truth is we are more like them than we would like to admit. We arrange, plan and control our lives, especially our religious lives according to our rules and standards. And we, like them, believe weve got Jesus figured out. But then, he goes and does something edgy: turning over our hearts like he turned over the tables in Gods house. Its no fun being turned inside out. And yet, therein lies the hope that is ours in Christ Jesus. He comes to set us free. He comes to challenge where and how we dont quite have him figured out. He comes as a baby to turn us over and around. He comes that we might see God anew. Lord, clean out our hearts that we may be able to hear, to see and to follow YOU rather than a messiah of our own making. Amen.
