Advent I In the living room -at the harpsichord, slogging my way through No. 78 getting ready for the next series of Cantata Concerts- wishing that my ability to sight read in C clefs was better. As I finished the first chorus, I noticed he was sitting on the couch across the room, score in hand and singing the bass line quietly. “ Do you think I will ever finish this project?” I said, “ I only have about 180 more to perform” ( I said this in a jocular tone) “Not at the rate you are going” “ But I have done 40 in seven years, thats nothing to sneeze at” Just then he sneezed “There are some things so important that you cant drag your feet with that little bit of Eternity He gave you- reminds me of a story” I hear a homily coming” I rolled my eyes. “Go on” “Up home they tell a story- the Enemy was prepping some newbies for their assignments, what are your tactics he asked. The first apprentice said Tell them there is no God - Wrong, even the hardest of hearts knows the truth deep within and you will never move the Believers. The second said “ tell them there is no Hell -Wrong again- you will never convince the Believers that He who is All Merciful is not All Just and that Evil will be ignored- and the self delusional are already convinced The third apprentice spoke up I will tell them there is no hurry – You, my lad will succeed for the one thing that is easiest for Man is to put off the rush to Grace” “Now” he said Lets do the second movement -you sing soprano in that incredibly bad falsetto of yours and I will sing the second part- and move, remember I know the Composer and he wants it done fast. I turned the page- cello and organ with figured bass in B flat, a Soprano and Alto duet “More C clefs I said “Lucky you “ he answered. And then we sang Wir eilen mit schwachen, doch emsigen Schritten, O Jesu, O Meister, zu helfen zu dir. (We hurry with weak but diligent steps, O Jesus, O Master to You for Your help) Thanks to Fr. Jason Kulczynski for reminding me of this old story. https://youtube/watch?v=uZMm1H7GNHU
