Advent Reflection #8 Luke 1:26-38 Mary was special. Like Abram, Noah, and David, she had found favor with God. When the Angel appears to her, she is unafraid. When the Angel tells her of the intensely personal and even scandalous role she will play in Gods great plan of redemption, she says, Here I am, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Mary was special. But not in the way one might think. She was young when youth was not looked on highly. She was female, in a day and age when women were viewed primarily as domestic possessions and valued for their child-bearing. She was a unmarried virgin - not capable, therefore, of having a child. She was poor. She was from a small, insignificant town in a small, insignificant country. Mary is the most unlikeliest candidate of all in Gods great plan of redemption - and yet she was a perfect choice. She was brave, faithful, and devoted to her God. Mary said, yes! And because of her affirmation and acceptance of Gods plans, we have all been blessed beyond hope. Take time to think about Mary. Take time to remember her. Take time to learn from her. Try repeating her response to the Angel yourself: Here I am, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word. Come Thou Long Expected Jesus
