Advent. Sunday, December 21. Baptist John was sent of God to - TopicsExpress

Advent. Sunday, December 21. Baptist John was sent of God to declare the year of the LORDS favour. To tell one and all that the promised Messiah was not only coming, but had come indeed. He testified long and loud, and on many occasions had to deny the titles attributed to him. Johns testimony was not one of enhancement nor a seeking after growth of his ministry. Indeed, John humbled his ministrations before the long awaited Messiah. Friends, John preached Christ. He was fully aware that Jesus was the Christ of God, but still, there was much of which he was unaware. He knew of Christ, but lacked a true understanding of Christs purpose with the incarnation. From prison, John sent to Jesus to ask if He was the Messiah, or should he expect another. The message from Isaiah Jesus returned spoke to His being Christ, but still the extent of Christs ministry was unclear. Yes, Christ would fulfill the role of Messiah, but this role would end with His crucifixion, death and resurrection. And this was not only unthinkable to every Jew, but deemed an impossibility. This was why Jesus added for John that those who did not take offence at Him would be blessed. For no one expected the death of a Messiah, even though Daniel had prophesied that Messiah would be cut off. And one can only image the shameful torment of a Christ follower from others when the One they called Messiah would be crucified and die as a common criminal. Friends, at this time of Advent, we have time to consider our understanding of Christ Jesus. To fix in our hearts and minds the truth. God Bless.
