Advent day # 15: lets show kindness to others. We read our morning book about kindness and read a few poems. Then I explained to the girls that we are so lucky to be together and healthy this holiday season. We talked about other things we felt grateful for. I told them that not all people had the opportunities we have and how its important to show kindness to others. I let the big girls pick a cause theyd like to share kindness with. Emily said she wants to make sure kids in hospitals have toys and games to play with during the holidays and Charlotte was very determined to help wild animals. So I made some calls and got some wish lists and we went shopping. Our first stop was to the Wild Life Care Association. They help local wild animals that have either been hurt or orphaned. The volunteer talked the girls about their mission and why they need donations like ours. I could tell Charlotte felt really proud of her efforts. Then we headed over to Shriners Childrens Hospital. They needed toys, board games and books. Emily was really excited to go through all her things at home and donate her own stuffed animals and books, and then she picked out a few new toys and games at the store. The volunteer at the hospital explained to the girls about how a lot of the children staying at the hospital only have one parent with them because they come from all over the country. So they dont have friends and family visiting them and its especially hard around the holidays and birthdays. She thanked them for their donations and told them it would make some children very happy. After our day out, I took my girls out to dinner and we followed up with their thoughts on the day. Im really always amazed at their profoundness. I feel like small acts of kindness shape their beings. The fact that they took ownership over their project made a big difference on the impact they felt they made. This was by far one of my favorite advent days and its something Id like to do more often. Kindness...passing it on!
