Adventures in Getting it Seriously Wrong The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) investigated a veal processing plant in New Jersey and found downed calves being dragged and apparent irregularities in slaughtering procedures. And the HSUS solution? Heres what HSUS said: The USDA needs to strengthen regulations to specify that downed calves must be immediately euthanized rather than suffer abuses to force them to rise and walk to their slaughter. When we presented our complaint and video to the USDA, the agency acted swiftly to suspend operations at the plant. TAKE ACTION Please send a message to Alfred V. Almanza, Administrator of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Services, thanking him for the agency’s swift action and asking the USDA to set standards for downed calves. So the action we should take? Thank the USDA and ask for more regulations. And if the process were regulated *perfectly*, it would still be absolutely horrible. The regulations do nothing but reassure the public that it can continue to consume animal products with a clear conscience. And the killing--however humane--cannot be justified morally. HSUS should have taken the position that the process cannot be regulated to achieve compassionate exploitation. If people care about animals, they should simply stop eating them and products made from them. Period. End of Story. How about getting that idea out there? If people are troubled and want to do less than stop or stop immediately, that can be their choice. But how about animal people speaking up for whats right and justice for the animals rather than perpetuating the idea that the problem is one of regulation? But I guess that would present a conflict for HSUS. HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle sits on the Board of the Global Animal Partnership, which has developed the Whole Foods Animal Welfare Rating Program to peddle various levels of happy animal corpses and products. An active pig farmer, Joe Maxwell, is a Vice-President of HSUS. The HSUS website says that Maxwell sells pork certified by the Global Animal Partnership to Whole Foods and other markets. HSUS is committed to the promoting the fantasy of happy exploitation. How sad.
