Adventures in the Animal Confusion Movement PETA announces that Ricky Gervais is the PETA Person of the Year. From all accounts, it appears that Gervais is not a vegan and that he consumes meat, dairy, etc. PETA says: True to PETA’s position against animal abuse, when Melissa Bachman posed with a lion she had just shot and a big grin on her face, Gervais posted, “I’ll pay for each pride of lions to have their own designated sniper on their side. Now it’s a sport …. So Gervais, who consumes animal products, is Person of the Year, and one reason for that is that he criticized Melissa Bachman? Hmm. Thats confusing. I certainly dont like what Melissa Bachman did but the reality is that the animals that Gervais eats has a worse life and a more violent death than the lion Bachman shot. And both Gervais and Bachman support the killing of animals for pleasure. Palate pleasure does not have any higher moral status than recreational pleasure. Gervais claims to care about animals. He calls them our equals. But he eats them. Bachman is honest: she thinks that animals are things and treats them as such. Gervais gets an award; Bachman gets enmity. And thats why it should be called the animal confusion movement (a term I heard many of years ago, as I recall from philosopher Tom Regan. It remains even more applicable these days). peta.org/blog/ricky-gervais-petas-person-year/
