Adventures of the Old Guy: Monday, January 27, 2014 The fun was over and it was time to go back to war-torn Detroit. The polar vortex had turned my town into a suburb of Siberia. Our plane needed repair before takeoff and two young guys came in to replace some control devices in the cockpit. They both wore baseball caps with the brim on the rear side of the hat. One guy appeared to be a clone of Alfred E Neumann of comic book fame. We were delayed for an hour and the faces of the pilots certainly looked concerned. The four-hour flight was uneventful but as we descended into Detroit we were told to fasten our seat belts and prepare for sever buffeting because of swirling winds. They were not kidding us as my book started to turn its pages by itself and my ball cap started to tip itself to the grim jawed stewardesses on its own. Looking out the window I could see the runway looming ahead of us. It appeared that we were going to land sideways like a runner sliding into a stolen base. At the last minute the engines roared and we struggled to gain altitude to go around for another try at landing. The repair job by Alfred E Newman came out of the memory room of my mind as started to flash its warning signals. We were committed and our fate was now in the hands of the pilot. Our second approach was on the money. My book was still turning pages and my hat had moved to the floor and was curled into a fetal position. My butt was trying to move up my body to visit my lungs as we hit the ground in a roar. The pilot threw out the anchor and we skidded a little bit sideways before we stopped. I was home safe and sound and ready to write about my last night in Vegas. I will do that tomorrow and I have pictures to go with my story. Life is good.
