Advice for Businesses How can my business help protect itself? You may wish to take the following precautionary measures. 1. Ensure that your premises are secure and if fitted your alarm systems are fully operational. 2. Ensure your CCTV system fully operational. 3. Consider keeping as little cash as possible on the premises. 4. Consider removing high value goods from display windows overnight. 5. Record serial numbers of any high value stock and goods. 6. Make sure all service doors are kept locked and secure when not in use. 7. Ensure staff report any suspicious activity to security and/or police. 8. Consider regular checks of the building and surrounding area. 9. Identify areas that are vulnerable to forced entry and reinforce. 10. Ensure keyholder list (people who can be contacted in case of emergency at your premises) is updated with the alarm company and the police. 11. Where possible retail premises should be suitably staffed with security guards. 12. Where possible ensure area around the premises is well lit. This will assist identifying possible offenders. 13. Where rubble, builders skips, flammable liquids, gas canisters etc are visible these should be locked away or removed completely from the area. 14. In the event of a non-emergency, call the police on non-emergency number. 15. In the event of an emergency, call the emergency number 999. 16. In order to assist with the investigation we ask that you consider the following points: 1. Victims of looting can expect police to seize CCTV footage. Businesses should ensure these are not erased and are kept out of sight should looters gain access to premises and take the opportunity to destroy the recording equipment. 2. Additionally businesses should keep a stock of tapes to replace those that maybe taken by police. 3. Where possible ensure property is as identifiable as possible e.g. make, model, serial numbers and colour. And have these ready for the police. 4. There maybe a need to refer to your stock records. Ensure your stock records are accurate and up to date. 5. Always obtain the officers number and the incident number on every occasion.
