Advocates Advice - Teachers, Parents, Advocates - When IEP goals/objectives list data collection as a Method of Evaluation, guess what............data is actually suppose to be collected (such as writing samples, reading samples, math samples, etc). Im finding often that schools are not collecting the data and keeping it from period to period. Parents have the right to request and review the data collection and you need to do so. Progress Reports just went out a couple of weeks ago. Look at yours. If it doesnt look right, ask to review the data collection. If the school doesnt have the backup data, you certainly have the right to question HOW they came up with their progress %s. This is very important to determine actual progress on goals/objectives and qualification for ESY (Extended School Year) services. Im getting all kinds of excuses from schools as to why they dont have the data, such as new teachers, old teachers that left, it was in a box they cant find, it was another schools fault, they were short staffed......... Schools often dont count on parents actually asking to see the data collection. When they cant produce it, I can only assume the progress %s were made up........as you should.
