Advocates of the Church-opposed Reproductive Health (RH) Law found - TopicsExpress

Advocates of the Church-opposed Reproductive Health (RH) Law found a contradiction between the Popes strong pro-life stance and his call to address poverty. Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello, an author of the RH law, said the Pope seemed to be out of synch with the views of majority of Catholic men and women on the issue of family planning. He simply refuses to acknowledge what poor women know firsthand: that inability to control the size of their families is one of the surest routes to perpetuating their childrens poverty, Bello said in a text message. And this is the response of Herman Daly, “Finally, we know that the economic system cannot grow forever on a finite planet. We must limit growth to ensure the well-being of the future, but one cannot ethically tell poor people they must continue to suffer deprivation to ensure that the future does not suffer. If the pie must cease to grow, then we are ethically obliged to redistribute it.” The Pope is right to emphasize redistribution and social justice. Definitely, hes not a neo-Malthusian doomsday prophet like Akbayan!
