Aerospace Student Senator Message: Hello, I hope - TopicsExpress

Aerospace Student Senator Message: Hello, I hope the start of your spring semester is going well. I am writing for your monthly Student Government update from your aerospace senator. Our last Student Senate meeting took place December 8th and we have not had one since due to finals, winter break, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In that meeting we discussed different resolutions and bills. Senate Bill 1314-20 was passed allocating funds in support of the TEDxGrandForks event. If anyone would like more information do not hesitate to contact me. Since my last Student Government update, the Elections Committee finalized a new Elections Code. If any of you are interested in running for a Student Senate, University Senate, or executive position that will apply to you. Also, the body passed a bill allocating funds to the Concert Choir for their once-in-a-lifetime educational trip. This was vetoed. If anybody has any input on what they would like me to do, if anything, I love the input. On a statewide level, the North Dakota Student Association has been extremely busy. This month’s meeting will occur in Bismarck on Friday and Saturday (24th and 25th) dealing with numerous issues. These include intellectual property rights as was mentioned during a joint-meeting over break. This would affect students, staff, and institutions. Another big issue is health insurance that I have been mentioning in my last couple emails. I have received many questions about it, and I welcome any more you may have. If I cannot answer it, I will forward them to people more associated with that decision-making process. We will also be discussing the upcoming State Board of Higher Education referendum in which voters will decide if the Board is needed in North Dakota. Research is being done to analyze the alternatives. Open textbooks, which would allow the North Dakota University System institutions to utilize the same texts, and undergraduate research opportunities will also be discussed. I am chairing a Merit-Based Scholarship Research Subcommittee in an attempt to investigate the success and feasibility of a merit-based scholarship program. This would affect current students as well as future students. I will be speaking on this issue Friday and Saturday in Bismarck at the NDSA meeting. Instead of attaching the immense amount of research notes the committee has compiled, if you are interested in the happenings of this subcommittee I’d be more than happy to discuss them with anybody. Back to UND, our next Student Senate meeting will be Sunday, January 26th in the River Valley Room of the Memorial Union at 6:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. I will also be holding informal constituent hours throughout this semester in the Link on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10-11. Depending on availability I will try to stay at the table in the northwest corner. If you have any questions, comments, or curiosities please feel free to stop by. I love input and suggestions. Good luck through this semester and stay warm! Sincerely Derek Labrie, Aerospace Student Senator
